A New Name

From today Why Family-Based Solutions will be called Family-Based Solutions. This change is made to reflect the shifting focus of the work I am doing. At the start of September, when the NGO is around for two years, I will post a blog giving more details about how my work is evolving. However, today, I would like to explain the change of name by addressing the shift in broader terms.

When I decided to fold Orphanage Projects and start Why Family-Based Solutions almost two years ago, I thought that as a single person my role in shifting alternative care from institutional to family-based care would necessarily be limited to awareness-raising and trying to shift mindsets by explaining why this was necessary. As an experienced, but unknown, person, I did not expect I would be able to do much more than that. And so I let the name of the organisation reflect that I would provide information on why family-based solutions are better for children and for the society they live in.

As I am building up a network and a name for myself, I now find that although awareness-raising is still an important part of what I do, I am also very much involved in guiding the movement towards family-based care and setting up new systems in various ways. And I would like the name of the organisation to reflect this.

Also, I find that many people already talk about ‘Family-Based Solutions’ rather than ‘Why Family-Based Solutions’ when referring to my undertakings. So I guess the change is relatively organic.

So, a new name but the same determination and spirit: Family-Based Solutions.
